Silent Night is one of my very favorite Christmas carols. I never really gave a lot of thought to where the song came from. Like other hymns, I knew that it had some kind of religious history associated with it but never knew any more. I was sent a product for this feature, but the story is my own.

Join renowned actor Simon Callow as he uncovers the moving origins of Silent Night. Simon journeys to the Austrian village of Oberndorf as well as the city of Salzburg, where the story of the world’s favorite carol had its origins.

The program introduces us to two impoverished children–Joseph Mohr and Franz Gruber–who grew up in Austria’s cobbled streets and wooded villages. The hard years that shaped them would also destine them to meet one day in a poor country church to unite Gruber’s music and Mohr’s text into this classic carol about the birth of a third poor boy on a quiet night in ancient Palestine.

I’ve never been to Austria (or anywhere near there) so it was a real treat to get to see the beautiful countryside and buildings there. Everything was especially gorgeous covered with snow. I loved learning more about the history of The First Silent Night. I had never heard of Joseph Mohr or Franz Gruber or the sacrifices that were made behind the story of this song.

If you’re looking for a new Christmas movie to watch, I definitely suggest you watch The First Silent Night. We enjoyed learning the story behind the song and seeing the sights of Oberndorf and Salzburg.

“THE FIRST SILENT NIGHT: THE CHRISTMAS CAROL THAT UNITED THE WORLD” is available on DVD now. The run time of the DVD is approximately 60 minutes and its SRP is $24.99. The DVD has over 45 minutes of bonus footage.
