The very best option for killing germs is to wash your hands in warm soapy water for twenty seconds. But, if you happen to be out and you don’t have access to soap and water, this kid friendly hand sanitizer will work to kill germs.

Hand sanitizers including this kid friendly hand sanitizer can be very drying to your skin. They should not be overused or used by children when not supervised by an adult.

The key to making a germ-killing hand sanitizer is to keep it at a 60% alcohol content which is about 2:1 alcohol to aloe vera gel mixture. When in doubt, speak to your child’s pediatrician before using this. You can read more about what kills germs on the CDC website.

If you can find Purell hand sanitizer in the store, you can grab one of those for yourself and your family.

Is hand sanitizer without alcohol effective?

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers that contain at least 60% alcohol content will kill 99.9% of germs according to the CDC. Hand sanitizers without alcohol may not kill the germs you’re worried about. When in doubt, please speak to your doctor.

Can you use too much hand sanitizer?

Hand sanitizer including this kid friendly hand sanitizer is only intended to be used when you do not have access to warm water and soap. If you use hand sanitizer too often, it can dry out your skin. This will cause your skin to crack and bleed which will make you more susceptible to germs.

Alcohol-free hand sanitizer

If you want an alcohol free hand sanitizer, you can use 3 tablespoons of aloe vera gel and one tablespoon of witch hazel. But, be aware that witch hazel will not kill the same viruses that alcohol will.

I would not give your child a full-size hand sanitizer for their own use. It only encourages overuse. If they are old enough to keep this kid friendly hand sanitizer on them, make sure you have a small-sized dispenser for them to use. This spray bottle makes it easy for them to apply without overusing.

How often should we use hand sanitizer?

Again, remember, hand sanitizer should only be used when you do not have access to warm water and soap. I generally keep it with me if I have to go into a store and hold things like shopping carts and door handles. If you are at home, use warm soap and water. You can even make your own liquid soap.
