Turning his back on his reckless lifestyle, former frat boy Clay Walsh has settled down to turn an antique shop in a small Midwestern college town….and to purse lofty and outdated theories on love and romance. But when Amber Hewson, a free-spirited woman with a gypsy soul, rents the apartment above his shop, Clay can’t help being attracted to her spontaneous and passionate embrace of life. Amber also finds herself surprisingly drawn to Clay, but his ideas about relationships are unusual to say the least, and they bring to light her own deep wounds and fears about love. They say opposites attract, but can Clay and Amber move beyond their differences and their pasts to attempt an “old fashioned” courtship?
Old Fashioned a Novelization by Rene Gutteridge
You may remember that I reviewed Old Fashioned on DVD a few weeks ago. Old Fashioned a Novelization by Rene Gutteridge is the novelization of that motion picture. Clay has a bit of a wild history from when he was a frat boy. He’s turned his life around and settled down to run a small antique shop. He has turned away from traditional ideas of what dating is to hold onto what everyone else in town thinks is an old fashioned view.
Amber arrives in town on a journey going from place to place until she runs out of gas. She has no interest in settling down and typically leaves each town as soon as there are problems or she starts to feel like she should stay. She meets Clay when she rents an apartment from him and at first thinks his old fashioned views are odd. Eventually, she begins to be drawn to him and his views because they are so different from hers. The two begin to get to know each other and try to see if they can work out their differences to begin an old fashioned courtship.
I generally avoid reading books that I have watched as movies because they are so different. In this case, the author did an amazing job of sticking to the story presented in the movie. If you’re looking for a realistic Christian romance, I definitely recommend Old Fashioned a Novelization by Rene Gutteridge.
Ellen is a mom of a 25-year-old son and 30-year-old daughter. She is Grandma to one adorable toddler. In what little spare time she has, she loves to read, watch movies, and check out the latest toys and games.
This sounds like a great read. While I’m not Christian – I’m Jewish – I find Christian romance novels to be refreshingly free of smut.
I bet you’d like this one, Melissa!
I”m not a reader, I’d rather watch the movie. But I”m like you, I would probably not read a book after seeing the movie.
The movie is really good!
I totally support the idea of old-fashioned courtship as long as it isn’t too extreme or unrealistic. This is a book or movie that I’d enjoy for sure!
I totally agree, Jen!
I like to hear about books that are similar to the movie! Thanks for the recommendation!
Always glad to share!
I’m looking forward to reading this, along with watching the lovely DVD. Many good reviews for this book so I won’t be disappointed! Thanks again!
We really enjoyed it, Deb!
