What is a sensory bottle?

A sensory bottle or calm bottle is a bottle that contains things like glitter, water, or sand that entertain children by watching them move.

This slow movement helps to calm children down and keep them busy. They are frequently used with children as a way to help them drift off to sleep or to keep them entertained quietly. There are many benefits of sensory play.

What goes in a sensory bottle?

Because this is a pirate sensory bottle, I’ve tried to stick to things that have to do with pirates’ gold and treasure. The aquarium gems could be real gemstones. And, the gold sequins could be pieces of eight or Spanish doubloons. Gold glitter would look fun as well.

You will also need to add some sort of liquid. Some people use corn syrup. This DIY sensory bottle uses clear Elmer’s glue and water.

If you want to make this a pirate science experiment, you can always add oil and water to turn it into a discussion about why they don’t mix.

What can I use instead of a sensory bottle?

It’s important that your pirate sensory bottle be sealed tightly so it doesn’t open up. And, it’s important that it won’t break.

For that reason, they make special bottles that are intended just for that reason.

But, if you don’t have one on hand, some people use plastic soda bottles. It’s vital that you make sure to glue the lid shut so that it doesn’t open.

If you’d rather not make your own, there are several different sensory kits at Walmart you can buy.
