I love Christian music. I find it uplifting and inspiring. While it’s not the only genre I listen to, it is definitely one of my favorites.  The song Awesome God is by far one of the best Christian songs to turn my mood back toward God. Awesome God is sung by Rich Mullins so when I learned there was a DVD based on his life, I knew I wanted to watch it.

Ragamuffin is based on the life of Rich Mullins, a musical prodigy who rose to Christian music fame and fortune only to walk away and live on a Navajo reservation. An artistic genius, raised on a tree farm in Indiana by a callous father, Rich wrestled all of his life with the brokenness and crippling insecurity born of his childhood. A lover of Jesus and a rebel in the church, Rich refused to let his struggles with his own darkness tear him away from a God he was determined to love. As he struggled with success in Nashville and depression in Wichita, Rich desired most of all to live a life of honest and reckless faith amidst a culture of religion and conformity.

About the DVD

This is the story of Rich Mullins, his life and his death.  It’s the story of a little boy that grew up with a Dad who never seemed to know how to tell him that he loved him, who never seemed to be able to relate to someone who was so different than he was. It’s the story of a man who left home, trying to fit in somewhere, with someone but never quite managing.  He truly loved Jesus but struggled with alcoholism and addiction and felt like a broken man who wasn’t good enough for anything. Even being a success in Nashville didn’t end up being what he truly wanted.

So many Christians seek God and have a vision of being perfect as the way to attain closeness to Him.  Rich Mullins felt much the same way. He was up on stage, trying to find that perfection he thought he needed to be close to God.  He never felt that he found it and he ran from place to place and problem to problem searching for it. This movie will take you on that journey with him.

I can honestly say that this one of the most powerful movies I have seen in a long time. By the end, I was sitting on the floor crying and I felt closer to God than I have in a long time. This is a movie you have to see.  You have to feel the message to truly understand.  I’ll leave you with this one quote from the movie that touched me the most:

“You don’t have to impress God. He’s already knocked out by you.”
