Watch Pauls Promise
Set in the peak of the 1960s Civil Rights movement, “Paul’s Promise” is the inspiring true story of Paul Holderfield, former racist firefighter-turned-pastor who started one of the first integrated churches in the American South.
It’s one man’s journey to hope and healing during a troubled time in our Nation’s history that resulted in one man’s decision to serve God and stand up to injustice – a story that continues to make a huge impact on the community to this day.

My thoughts
I grew up in the 1970s, so I have some memories of the Civil Rights movement, but it wasn’t something that impacted me growing up. I was certainly never directly touched by it, so I found this movie fascinating because it gave me a close-up view of some of the turmoil during this time.
Paul is a racist who has done some hurtful things in the past. In the beginning, he isn’t a very nice person at all. And it’s difficult to watch how he treats other people. I don’t want to spoil the movie by sharing why he changes, but he does. And he devotes the rest of his life to helping people once he realizes what he’s done. It’s truly inspiring to see.
I love knowing that this movie is based on a true story because it shows that people can change with the power of prayer. Don’t give up. Keep those prayers coming because God does hear them, and people can change.
While the movie is rated PG and does contain some adult topics like racism and domestic violence, I wouldn’t say that it’s portrayed in a really scary way. If you have an older child with whom you’ve discussed these topics, they could watch the film with you.
You will want to see this film and have a difficult discussion with your older children once you’ve seen it.
