Olive is not your ordinary girl. And one day when this spunky young lady decides to go for a walk in her grumpy, too-busy city, she finds some extraordinary things. What Olive does with them will delight and inspire. This lively picture book is filled with the author’s exuberant collage artwork and playfully hand-lettered words.

I love discovering new books to read to my grand children. We like to spend quite a bit of time reading and finding new “adventures” to go on. In the process, we have accumulated a whole library in our rec room over the years. We just added All the Lost Things by Kelly Canby to our wonderful collection.
All the Lost Things is about a little girl named Olive, who goes for a walk in the city one day. When a mysterious noise from a nearby manhole perks her curiosity, Olive discovers an underground world. This world is full of boxes of lost things from around the city. She finds some items like keys and remote controls. Olive meets an old lady, who tells Olive to take whatever she likes. Excited, Olive brings home some gifts for her family as well as something special for the whole world.
I would recommend this for readers between the ages of 4 and 8. We agree that we love the message that this story entails of hope when all is lost. My ten year old enjoyed sitting with us while I read to the younger ones. I like the fact that the illustrations in All the Lost Things are a mixture of color and black and white. This made Olive stand out from the background. I think that kept the kids’ interest longer as well.
I like that there was a twist in this story. It looked like it would become a great adventure when she finds the manhole, but instead, it’s more of a story of showing people that there is hope when you don’t think there will be.
If you are looking for a children’s book that offers a message of hope, then I recommend reading All the Lost Things by Kelly Canby. All the Lost Things is definitely a book to read again and again.

This sounds like a great book. My goal this summer was to grow our home library. I think this book would be perfect for it.
What a great goal!
I am intrigued to read it as an adult because it sounds inspiring. I will have to look for it to share with my 6 year old.
