Bridge of Spies ReviewTom Hanks is one of my favorite actors and I was so glad to see that he has a major role in Bridge of Spies. My husband loves war and espionage movies so I knew this was a movie that he was going to enjoy. While that’s not generally one of my favorite genres, I wasn’t going to miss a movie that starred Tom Hanks!

Bridge of Spies Review

A dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, “Bridge of Spies” tells the story of James Donovan (Tom Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on a near impossible mission to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. High stakes and suspense power a story inspired by true events that capture the essence of a man who risked everything and vividly brings his personal journey to life.

James Donovan is an insurance lawyer from Brooklyn who is asked to represent a man accused of being a Russian spy. He doesn’t really want to do it because he knows people will hate him for defending an accused spy but his boss convinces him to. Once he begins defending the man, he learns that his boss really only expected him to give the appearance of defending him, not to treat it the same way he would someone who wasn’t a spy. James Donovan refuses to treat this case any differently than he would any other case which causes him and his family to be ostracized and threatened.

Because he tried his best, the spy is sentenced to life in jail instead of death. One of our pilots ends up being captured in Russia and James Donovan is sent to facilitate an exchange of the two prisoners. This exchange is what Bridge of Spies is all about and the story was both fascinating and full of suspense.  I had no idea that this story was actually based on real events but it was and that made the story even more interesting.

If you enjoy war or spy movies (or are just a huge Tom Hanks fan), I definitely recommend you watch Bridge of Spies.
