Counting on Birds: Tales of Migration

Counting on Birds: Tales of Migration is a two-DVD set that includes five programs produced by New Hampshire Public Television that follow the different journeys of New England’s migratory birds. Host Willem Lange travels around North and South America and meets the bird enthusiasts and experts who track and protect them. Lange is an author and Emmy Award-winning host of New Hampshire Public Television’s Windows to the Wild series who has a passion for outdoor adventure.

This two disc collection includes:

  • Counting on Birds– Meet bird lovers who participate in the National Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count, from the forests of New Hampshire and Maine, to the mountains of Ecuador and tropics of Cuba. It’s the longest-running wildlife census in the world.
  • Bird Tales – Why are people so devoted to birds? Meet American and Nicaraguan schoolchildren, a birdsong expert, an artist, a bird sanctuary guide and a prison inmate who are all passionate about birds.
  • Saving Songbirds – Meet people dedicated to saving migratory songbirds, from scientists tracking their populations, to Vermont schoolchildren helping to re-forest mountains in Costa Rica, to coffee farmers engaged in bird-friendly practices.
  • Journey of the Broad-Winged Hawk – Every year broad-winged hawks embark on a spectacular 4,500-mile journey from New Hampshire to South America. Trace the migration of these magnificent raptors, and meet the people and communities who follow them.
  • Plight of the Grassland Birds – From the vast plains of Montana, the deserts of Mexico, and the meadows of New England, grassland birds are losing their habitats at an alarming rate. Find out how these birds and their habitats are being saved.

Marty and I love to watch the birds at our feeders. We enjoy trying to identify them and learning which birds visit our feeders during which seasons. We really enjoyed this DVD because we got to learn about a lot of different birds that we don’t see at our feeders.  It was also interesting to learn about people that are trying to help the songbirds and other birds whose habitats are threatened.

If you enjoy learning more about wildlife or bird watching, I highly recommend you watch this Counting on Birds: Tales of Migration today.

  1. I really don’t know much about birds and their migration patterns. We really didn’t have many to watch growing up or didn’t go bird watching, but they are beautiful. I’m sure I’d learn a thing or two with this DVD!
