In the third novel in the “entertaining” (Library Journal) Gin & Tonic mystery series, the stakes are raised when Ginny Mallard and Teddy Tonica stumble on an underground dog fighting ring with bloody consequences.

Even though she’s unlicensed as an investigator, the infamously nosy Ginny Mallard has begun to make a name for herself as an unofficial champion of the tongue-tied. When a mysterious stranger comes to her with landlord trouble, she convinces her bartender friend Teddy Tonica to help her once more. Soon, they realize they might have got themselves tied up in an underground dogfighting ring. With the help of Ginny’s pet shar-pei puppy and Tonica’s tabby cat, they have to figure out what’s going on before someone else gets hurt. Will twelve legs really be better than four?

Doghouse A Gin & Tonic Mystery by L. A. Kornetsky

Ginny & Tonica and their four legged friends are asked to look into a mystery involving an accusation of dog fighting. They’re convinced the person who was accused of dogfighting is innocent and decide to look into the matter for a friend. When they check out the home where the dogfighting is supposed to have taken place, they find a puppy in the basement and a smell that makes them think something definitely happened there. They aren’t convinced that the accused was involved and the case gets more interesting from there.

Doghouse is a fun read because the story switches back and forth between being written from the human’s points of view and the animals points of view.  The author managed to make each pet have their own way of thinking and acting and it was lots of fun to see the story through their eyes. I’m a huge animal lover and the pets were all so adorable.  Penny was a cat with an attitude who is very smart and tries to help her owner, Tonica, figure out this mystery. Georgie is a sweet, but not that bright, shar-pei who tries to help Penny.  Parsifal is the new puppy and is absolutely adorable and full of enthusiasm.

If you love mysteries where animals take part, you definitely have to read Doghouse and the rest of the books in the series.

I’m sharing this review with you this week as part of Animal Welfare Week. Here is some praise for the book series from other sources:

“[Fixed] is the second foray into the lives of a very unlikely pair of investigators; unlikely and a whole lot of fun…Collared was the first title that introduced this extremely fun ‘family and friends’ grouping, and the author has come back with a sequel that will truly make Gin & Tonic a well-known duo! Very light-hearted, this is a great book. Any reader who likes the ‘cozy’ avenue will love this mystery, with a little bit of cat and dog language thrown in for fun.” Suspense Magazine

    • It’s not really a book for kids – even tweens. The story takes place in a bar that the characters own. There isn’t anything in appropriate but there is that type of scene in the story.

  1. I love mysteries, and I especially love mysteries in which animals play an important role—thanks for the opportunity to win a copy of this book!
