Driving Miss Daisy play DVDFriendship has the power to change the world. I’m a firm believer that many of our world’s problems could be solved if we just treated each other as friends.

I generally prefer documentaries over fiction but when I was offered the chance to review Alfred Uhry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Driving Miss Daisy, I couldn’t resist.

My first exposure to Driving Miss Daisy was as a 1989 movie that starred Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy. I didn’t realize that the time that the film was based on a play written by Alfred Uhry.

If you don’t remember the story, Miss Daisy is a 72-year-old woman who has just wrecked a car. Her son decides it is not safe for her to drive any longer and hires her an African American driver.

She’s very resistant to having anyone drive her around and refuses to let him drive her. Eventually, the two become friends despite the race issues that are occurring in Georgia at that time.

As much as I loved the movie, I enjoyed the play even more. I really enjoyed watching the story told with real people on the stage. It was fascinating to see how the story was told and what props, etc. were used for each scene.

Angela Lansbury is one of my favorite actresses and I had no idea that she also did plays. The rapport between her and James Earl Jones was just amazing, and I alternated from laughing to crying several times.

Whether you have seen the movie or not, I definitely recommend that you watch the Driving Miss Daisy play DVD as it was recorded in Australia at the Comedy Theatre in Melbourne. It will give you a deeper understanding of race issues and changing thoughts during that time period and it’s a very enjoyable way to spend ninety minutes.

  1. My sister would enjoy this as she’s into plays more, but also a voracious reader. I like the DVDs and do love Angela Lansbury. I like going back and looking at actors’ work when they were just young stars starting out in Hollywood. So lucky we have many local LA stations running the oldies too.
