My Her Perfect Lies review
What stood out to me most was the number of interconnected storylines. This isn’t a thriller built around one character discovering one secret. There are multiple people with different motivations, histories, relationships, and secrets.
That gives the book a soap-opera-like quality at times, but with considerably darker stakes.
The 44 relatively short chapters also help keep things moving. The perspective and situation can change quickly, and chapter titles such as The Mission, Whispers in the Dark, When Love Turns to Terror, Kidnapper’s Lair, The Web of Deception, and Dial ‘M’ for Murder give you a pretty good idea of how much the tension escalates.
I particularly liked that characters aren’t always exactly what they initially appear to be. Someone’s romantic interest may have another motivation. A seemingly isolated event may be connected to something much larger. And decisions made earlier in the story can have consequences much later.
The Lagos setting also gives the book a distinctive backdrop. Careers, wealth, family relationships, social expectations, romance, and crime all become part of the larger story.
A story about more than romance
Although relationships are central to Her Perfect Lies, I wouldn’t describe this primarily as a romance.
Love frequently becomes the thing that makes the characters vulnerable.
Trust is tested repeatedly, and obsession, jealousy, greed and revenge push several characters toward increasingly dangerous decisions. As the book moves into its later chapters, the consequences become much more serious and the various storylines begin coming together.
Readers who enjoy stories about complicated relationships, hidden motives and people making questionable choices will probably find plenty here to keep them wondering what will happen next.
Who would enjoy Her Perfect Lies?
I’d recommend Her Perfect Lies particularly to readers who enjoy psychological thrillers with a large cast rather than a single protagonist.
It’s also a good choice if you like books that combine relationship drama, suspense, crime, betrayal and revenge. There are enough twists and competing motives that you’ll probably find yourself reconsidering which characters you trust as the story progresses.
Because the novel deals with kidnapping, violence, abusive relationships, crime and murder, readers looking for a light romantic story should be aware that the book moves into much darker subject matter.
