Lately there hasn’t been that much on television that I’ve wanted to watch so I decided to turn to DVDs instead. This Poldark Season 1 DVD was provided for review. Poldark is a British Poldark Season 1 DVDtelevision series based on a series of historical novels written by Winston Graham. The BBC adapted them with Poldark, a series that originally appeared in 1975 and 1976 and now again in 2015.

The series takes place in the late 1700s and early 1800s. In Poldark Seaon 1 DVD, it is 1783 and Ross Poldark has just returned home from the American Revolution. He finds that his father has died, his family’s estate is in ruins, there is a recession in Cornwall and his childhood sweetheart (Elizabeth) is about to marry his cousin because she thought he was dead.

Ross feels like everything in his life has been destroyed and tries to rebuild his it. He feels sorry for some of the villagers because of the situation they’re in with the mine in ruins and hires them on as servants. He rescues a local miner’s daughter from an abusive father and takes her on as a kitchen maid. He briefly considers heading to London and giving up after his Uncle tries to bribe him to leave the area. Thankfully, he decides to stick it out and reopen the mine with hopes that he’ll be successful.

Ross Poldark’s life is a series of ups and downs based on some very stupid choices he makes. He does end up learning from them but they impact his entire life and his eventual marriage to Demelza. I loved watching the drama play out between the characters and found the class struggle between the aristocracy and the “vulgar” (peasants) to be fascinating.  Honestly, Ross is one of those men that truly needs the support of a strong woman to make good decisions. I found Elizabeth to be rather annoying and typical of the stereotyped woman of her time period.

All in all, I devoured the first three episodes in one sitting and would have kept going had it not been close to midnight. The remaining episodes were just as amazing. If you enjoy British programming or historical series, I highly recommend that you buy Poldark Season 1 DVD today.

“POLDARK” will be available on DVD and Blu-ray July 7, 2015. The run time of this program is approximately 480 minutes on 3 discs. The DVD SRP is $44.99 and the Blu-ray SRP is $49.99. The program will also be available for digital download.

  1. I do watch some BBC but am more of a WW2 era fan. I should educate myself on earlier times. I know there are some great stories from that time period.
