I’ve always encouraged my kids to read. From as early as I can remember, either I was reading them a story or they were reading one themselves. While my daughter could always be found with a novel, my son has always gravitated more toward comics and graphic novels. Either way, any love of reading is good.

The MUTTS Winter Diaries by Patrick McDonnell
If you or your children enjoy comics, you’re probably familiar with the comic strip MUTTS, which has been around since 1994. MUTTS now appears in over 700 newspapers in 20 countries and was described by Peanuts creator Charles Schulz as “One of the best comic strips of all time.”
The author, Patrick McDonnell, has received numerous awards for this strip, including the National Cartoonists Society’s highest honor, The Reuben, for Cartoonist of the Year. MUTTS also won awards for its environmental and animal advocacy: two Genesis Awards from The Ark Trust, The HSUS Hollywood Genesis Award for Ongoing Commitment, the PETA Humanitarian Award, and a Sierra Club award.
MUTTS is more than just a comic strip. McDonnell’s website, MUTTScomics.com, promotes his animal- and earth-friendly philosophy and all of the MUTTS books are printed on recycled paper. The MUTTS Winter Diaries by Patrick McDonnell lets you enjoy wintertime with Earl and Mooch as they get ready to hibernate. While preparing to sleep, they also take the time to enjoy winter with their friends Shtinky Puddin’, Bip, and Bop. The comics are fun and easy to read and more importantly, they teach kids important lessons about animals.
If you visit the MUTTS website, you can learn more about how you can make sure winter animals stay warm and full of snacks through the cold, snowy months. Just click on the More to Explore tab for more information. There’s also a section in the back of the book that talks about how we can help our animal friends this winter. The MUTTS Winter Diaries is a great way to start a conversation with your child about helping animals and making eco-friendly decisions.
To coincide with the release of the new book, The Mutts Winter Diaries, Richard Leeds International has designed a cozy nightshirt to give you the sweetest of dreams.

Ellen is a mom of a 25-year-old son and 30-year-old daughter. She is Grandma to one adorable toddler. In what little spare time she has, she loves to read, watch movies, and check out the latest toys and games.
I didn’t realize that Mutts had a eco-friendly leaning. Makes it all the better comic for kids.
Totally agree, Shelley!
I get their comic strip in my email daily–brightens my day since I’m a dog lover.
