We love Eric Carle’s books! Who doesn’t? Carle’s stories are so popular, I bet every parent out there has read at least one of his stories. Our favorites are the Brown Bear and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

I remember reading these books to my kids (especially, The Hungry Caterpillar) over and over when they were little. I also read the Brown Bear to my daycare kids and we even had little sewn characters that went along with the story. 

I carried the tradition down to the grandkids as well. They love them just as much and each has their own copy of these books.

In The world of Eric Carle’s Press out and Play, he takes his beloved books and makes them come to life! The first part of the book has beautiful illustrations of the characters from his stories.

Below the illustration is a section with the directions on how to put together the punch out characters found in the back of the book. These characters come ready to color and you get some crayons that come with it, so that’s a nice benefit.

Since my kids are too old to do this activity, I made my eleven-year-old help the grandkids with the project of coloring the animals and popping them out. I thought maybe they would tear otherwise.

But, the paper was very sturdy, so the younger ones were able to press them out themselves with no problem. The paper colored easily as well and they made the characters match the illustrations in the front.

I would suggest giving this as a gift for the little one in your life. Any of his stories would make a great collection for a family’s children’s book.
