My Dad has been in the Navy for as long as I remember. It’s part of our family and Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day have always been big holidays for us. We learned respect for our country, our flag, and our military at a young age and I think that’s a good thing that I’ve tried to pass on to the kids. I was sent a product for this feature. The story is my own.
Faith of Our Fathers DVD Giveaway
We were very lucky that my Father came home after the war. I cannot imagine the pain of losing someone important in a war, especially as a child. John Paul and Wayne are two young men in search of their fathers. Problem is…their fathers have been dead for 25 years. Eddie and Steven are two young men in search of their sons…whom they’ve never met.
In 1969, Eddie and Steven are with their squad deep in the jungle of Vietnam on a five-day mission to retrieve fallen comrades. They write letters to their wives, often mentioning their love for their sons, one, who is an infant and one yet to be born. In 1994, John Paul and Wayne go on a five day road trip to the Vietnam Wall in Washington DC to see their fathers’ names. Along the way, reading those letters, they begin to get an understanding of who their fathers were and how they died.
Trials and mishaps, both funny and sad, complicate the road trip for the boys. The horrors of war and the testing of faith manifest themselves for the young men in Vietnam. Ultimately, in parallel stories – 25 years apart – the fathers and sons are bound together forever.
When I first started this DVD, I expected it to be a tear jerker and I was right. There were so many times during the film that I found myself in tears. But, I was also pleasantly surprised that there were times that had me laughing as well. This movie really takes you through the whole range of emotions as you watch it. Faith of our Fathers DVD is a great family film to watch with older kids since it is PG-13. The dialog here really serves as a great starting point for a conversation about serving our country and our God.
