I love reading books that take place in other countries because it’s a chance for me to travel without leaving my home. Since I love stories that take place in the past, I often find myself reading historic fiction that happens in places like the British Empire.  Monto! Feckin’ Monto! by Joel Amont

Monto! Feckin’ Monto! is a historic story that takes place in the British Empire more than a century ago. The story is about a jewel heist that has never been solved to this day – the theft of the Irish Crown Jewels.

While the story contains information about real people, places, and events, the details of these have been changed slightly to help the author tell the story. There are a number of photographs included in the story that the author found from the public domain as well as photographs that have never been seen before.

My thoughts:

I love the way that the author told this story using real accents and details of daily life that would actually have existed in the British Empire. It makes the story seem all the more real and helped me imagine what life was like during that time period.

One of my favorite characters in the story was Daisy because she was a strong woman during a time period that wasn’t easy to live in, but it was easy to feel like I knew each of the characters in the story.

The story takes place in Montgomery Street which was home to one of the largest brothels of the time. By reading, I learned that “monto” was the name given to the red light district in Dublin (Ireland’s capital) which is where much of the story takes place. The word comes from the street name Montgomery.

If you enjoy historical fiction, I think you’ll enjoy reading Monto! Feckin’ Monto! by Joel Amont.
