Summer car trips when I was a child were torture. It seems like my parents always chose the route that had nothing to look at besides fields full of cows. As a child, I hadn’t yet developed my appreciation for country living and I longed for something interesting to see out the window that I hadn’t seen already. My younger sister spent the entire trip trying to annoy me and the hours just stretched on and on forever.

The Great Railroad Game
I would have given just about anything at that time for a fun travel game to play like The Great Railroad Game. The Great Railroad Game is part of the Vintage Game Series of games. It is travel game sized and all of the pieces and parts fit neatly into the storage tin. That’s what makes this the perfect game for road trips.
In The Great Railroad Game, you race your train across nineteenth century America. In this vintage game, you toss the unique train die to race and move your peg around the United States. Depending on where you land, you pick up materials and either go to the next station or return home to deliver your load. The United States is depicted on a solid wood course inside a golden tin box. This is a high quality reproduction 1891’s American game set that includes beautiful printing, wooden pins, train die and scoring instructions.
The Great Railroad Game was originally published by the R Bliss Manufacturing Company in 1891. It included an elaborate heavy cardboard playing surface with 12 playing pieces in the shape of trains that had beautifully lithographed paper coverings. The game had much of the skill of checkers mixed with the play of chess.
This reproduction game is fun to play on a car trip but can also be used to start a conversation with the kids about the types of commodities offered in different parts of the country during that time period. Just a few commodities you’ll need to pick up on your travel include timber, livestock, steel, lobster and gold.
If you’re looking for a fun game, I definitely recommend you play The Great Railroad Game!

Ellen is a mom of a 25-year-old son and 30-year-old daughter. She is Grandma to one adorable toddler. In what little spare time she has, she loves to read, watch movies, and check out the latest toys and games.
That looks like so much fun – would be perfect for when we are camping! 🙂
It definitely would, Jamie!
My father was very strict so we needed to keep quiet and that we did. My older sister and I read. I remember trying to memorize Bible verses from my little New Testament Bible for Bible School, for when we got back. I wish I would have paid more attention to the countryside too, since I now live in the city. This looks like a cool little activity.
I’m sure you were much better behaved than we were, Deb!
I love games like this, I think on an airplane would be great as well as the box is self contained. Wonder if they updated the game for today or left it in it’s original version?
It is different than the original version but still has that vintage charm!
