So, there are a number of different ways you can make a balloon garden. Some people use them to go over the top of the party table. And, some people use them to go around a door arch. They both use the same process. But, the end result is slightly different.

How many balloons are needed for a balloon garland?

This will depend on how long the garland is and what size balloons you use when you make it. For visual interest, I recommend alternating sizes of the balloons you use. But, this is optional.

If you want to alternate, use one 11″ balloon and then three 5″ balloons. You will need about 16 large and 50 small balloons to cover an 8′ x 2′ area.

How do you make a simple balloon garland?

For an easy garland, you will need balloons, twine, and some type of greenery. This is a very frugal way to create a garland. You will need to inflate all of the balloons first. Don’t overinflate them or they will pop more easily. It’s best to blow them up only about 3/4 of the way.

  • Inflate all of the balloons.
  • Cut a 3″ piece of twine for every balloon you have.
  • Cut one long piece of twine to form the base of your garland.
  • Start tieing the balloons to the larger piece of twine.
  • Alternate colors and sizes
  • Attach greenery or decorations for visual interest if desired.

Do I need to use helium?

That’s a personal preference. Balloons filled with helium will stay inflated longer than balloons that are just filled with air. If you have time to make your garland right before your event, you don’t need helium.

So, if you want to make it the day before, I would recommend helium which means that your balloon garland should last for about a week. check out the video for some tips for using a helium tank.

If you don’t want to deal with helium or be rushed at the last minute, you really need Hi-Float which will make your traditional latex balloons last for days on end. It’s a lifesaver when putting together a balloon garland.

How do you attach a balloon garland to a backdrop?

So, one of the most important tips I can share as part of these easy balloon garland instructions is to use glue dots NOT  a hot glue gun. Using a hot glue gun near a balloon will make it pop if it’s too hot. Glue dots are a huge help. Just carefully attach the glue dot to the balloon and carefully press it against your backdrop.
