Moving from Crib to Bed
Whether you are considering moving from crib to bed because your child is climbing out or because you need the crib for another child, here are a few things you should consider.
When should you transition from crib to bed?
There really isn’t a specific age when you should move your child from crib to bed. It’s not really about how old your child is or how much they weigh. Instead, moving them from their crib into a bed is more about their safety. If they are climbing out of their crib it’s probably time to put them into a bed.
Don’t wait too long
Most children begin trying to climb out of their crib between 18 and 24 months of age. At that point, you should be moving them to a traditional bed. If your child isn’t trying to climb out of their bed, you can certainly wait. But, be aware that the longer you wait, the more attached they become to their crib. This can make the transition more difficult.
Sibling jealousy
You don’t want your child to become jealous of a new sibling because they think that they are getting “their” crib. If you are planning another baby, be sure to move your child out long before you think you’ll need the crib for another child.
Transition from crib to floor bed
You can certainly simply move your child from their crib directly into a twin bed. If you’re concerned about safety, you can put bumper rails on the bed to prevent them from falling off. Some parents place the crib’s mattress directly on the floor and then transition to a bed. Others simply move them from the crib to the bed at one time. Be sure to talk to them before you do it.
Make it fun
When you are talking to your child about moving from the crib to a bed, make sure you make it a fun process. Let them pick out “big kid” sheets with their favorite characters or a brand new stuffed toy for their new bed. Be sure that you stick to a bedtime routine each night to encourage peaceful sleep.
