Movie review
Mental illness and homelessness are very difficult topics for anyone to discuss with children. They are hard enough for adults to understand in the best of times.
5,000 Blankets does a wonderful job presenting this topic for older children. Because they are so sensitive, the movie is rated PG-13 and is most suitable for older kids.
During the time of year when we are most busy, 5,000 Blankets is a movie that makes you stop and think about what’s really important. It can also be a great starting point for a discussion about helping others especially during the holidays.
The movie presents the topics of homelessness and mental illness in a way that older kids and adults will really relate to. Sometimes we turn a blind eye to these things because we think they can never happen to us or people we know.
But, seeing this happen to an average family makes us realize that they can help. I found the movie heartwarming and inspiring. It made me want to DO something to help, not just watch the movie.
I recommend this as a family holiday film everyone needs to see.

I would love to watch this film with my sons. Great lessons are/ can be taught with this film.
I like the lessons people can learn from watching this. More people need to learn to be sympathic to the homeless. Not everyone is an addict. And most would be terrified to learn how easy it is to become homeless and how hard once that happens to not be homeless forever.
This hits home for me. Our new mayor just declared a state of emergency on homelessness as her first task as LA mayor. I walk almost daily around tents on the sidewalks where homeless are camped out. The trailer brought tears to my eyes so I’m glad I can help promote this movie to give more attention to this persistent issue.
I want to see this movie! I love to watch movies filled with kindness toward others. You never know what someone else is going through!
