Demonstrate Chain Reactions for Kids
If you’re introducing your child to STEM learning, you might be wondering how to create a simple chain reaction machine to explain endless motion to your child.
Stem learning often involves demonstrating the science behind how an ordinary task works. You can use a DIY project to explain chain reactions. Or, check out the details of the Zip Linx Triple Tower Blast, one of the best stem toys I’ve tried.
What is a chain reaction?
It is a process in which particles interact to create new products. The first step is called an “initiator.” This initiator sets off a series of events that leads to the creation of new products.
For example, when you light a candle, the heat from the flame starts the process. The heat from the flame melts the wax near the wick. This liquid wax is drawn up the wick by capillary action. As the liquid wax reaches the flame, it vaporizes and starts to burn. This produces more heat, which melts more wax, and so on.
What is chain reaction for kids?
Simply put, it is a process where one thing leads to another. It’s like dominoes: once the first domino falls, it creates a chain reaction that causes all the other dominoes to fall too.
Chain reactions can happen with any matter, including solids, liquids, and gases. And it doesn’t have to be just one thing that sets off the response, it can be a combination of things.
You can create a chain reaction with just about anything: dominoes, paper cups, marbles, balls, blocks, toy cars—whatever you have around the house!
Simple Chain Reaction Projects
Here is a simple chain reaction project you can try at home with your child. It’s very basic and will work with younger children.
Older kids will want something a bit more in depth like the Zip Linx Triple Tower Blast I’ll discuss below.
Balloon rocket chain reactions
You’ll need:
- 1 balloon
- 1 straw
- Tape
- 2 chairs
- String
Instructions:
- Tie a string to something heavy like a chair.
- Insert the string into a straw
- Tie the other end of the string to something heavy like a chair.
- Make sure the string is straight between the two objects.
- Blow up a balloon and pinch the end to prevent the air from coming out.
- Tape the top of the balloon to the straw near the beginning of the string.
- Take your fingers off the balloon to allow the air out and watch it go.
What is a chain reaction machine?
It is a device that starts a chain reaction. It is usually made up of simple machines working together to create the desired effect.
One example is a Rube Goldberg machine. Rube Goldberg machines are designed to accomplish a simple task in the most complicated way possible. They are named after American cartoonist Rube Goldberg, who often drew cartoons of complex devices that performed simple tasks.
Another example of this is a domino chain. Domino chains are made by lining up dominoes in a row and then toppling the first domino, which causes the second domino to fall until all of the dominoes have fallen.
A pendulum is another example of how chain reactions work. When you start a pendulum swinging, it will continue to swing back and forth until something stops it. The energy from the initial push starts the pendulum moving, and the weight of the pendulum keeps it moving.

Zip Linx review
The Zip Linx Triple Tower Blast is a great way to teach your kids about chain reactions. Watching the balls fly through the air and land on the targets is also a lot of fun.
This set is recommended for ages six and up, but younger kids will also enjoy watching the balls fly. It’s a great gift for Christmas so add this to your list.
I was impressed at how easy it is to use. You just clip the Linx together in whatever order you like. You can expand up and down or left to right or both. Then, you put the balls on the launders and watch the balls fly.
Practice your aim and use this fun chain reaction toy to teach your child about chain reactions.
The Zip Linx Triple Tower Blast would make an excellent gift for any kid who loves to build and experiment. I was very impressed with the quality of the pieces, and the directions were easy to follow.
