Rock Painting Flowers for Kids
Rock painting flowers is a relatively simple design to start with. Unlike a bear or a dog, a flower can look a variety of different ways. So, if your child is worried about whether or not their design will look like what they intend, start with a flower.
Of course, there are lots of different types of flowers you can paint on rocks. If you want sunflower rock painting ideas, make the flowers yellow with a brown center. If you want to paint a daisy on a rock, use white petals and a yellow center.

Frequently asked questions
What kind of paint do you use on rocks?
The best type of paint for rock painting flowers is acrylic paint. This paint is not intended to be used outside in the garden. It’s not waterproof and won’t withstand the elements.
Do Sharpies work on rocks?
I don’t recommend Sharpies or makers on rocks. The Sharpie marker will fade over time. And, it doesn’t seal well. Acrylic paint is rather inexpensive. So, just grab a few bottles of your favorite colors and use those.
What are the best rocks for painting?
You will want to look for relatively flat rocks. River rocks work well. If your rock isn’t flat enough, it will be difficult to fit the whole flower on one side. Alternatively, if you cannot find rocks outside in your area, you can buy flat rocks from Amazon to paint on.
This is one of the easiest painting activities for kids because there are no hard and fast rules. Just allow them to be creative.
What are kindness rocks?
If you’ve ever been out on a walk and seen a painted rock on the ground or hidden somewhere, you have found a kindness rock. Simply put, kindness rocks are nice gestures to make someone smile. They can have a message painted on them. Or, they can simply be an image like these flowers. If you find one and take it, please be sure to put a new painted rock in its place. Or, take that one and hide it somewhere new for someone else to find.

How do you paint flowers on rocks?
The first step is to start with clean dry rocks. You will need to brush off the dirt and then wash them. Allow them to dry completely on both sides before you begin. After that, you will want to paint the entire rock the same color. You can use any color you want. Just make sure that it contrasts with your flower. You may need to do more than one coat.
The next step will be to make the dot in the center of the rock. Just use the tip of your paintbrush. Be careful not to use too much paint. After that, you will want to paint petals. Begin at the center of the rock near the dot and draw the brush out slowly toward the end of the rock. Try to make the petals the same size.
You can choose to make only one flower on your rock. Or, you can make multiples. It really depends on how large the rock is. Then, spray a clear glaze on the rock to set it.
Finally, allow the rock to dry completely before you move it.
That’s really all there is when it comes to rock painting flowers. Experiment with other designs and create an entire garden inside. Try some of these easy rock painting designs next.
