What is sensory play?
Sensory play is any activity that engages a child’s senses: touch, smell, taste, sight, and hearing. Children must explore their senses as they learn about the world around them.
Shaving cream paint is one of my favorite art activities. It is a bit messy, but play activities often are. Be sure to protect the table, so the food coloring doesn’t stain.
Why is sensory play important?
Sensory play is an essential part of a child’s development. It helps them learn about their senses, develops their fine motor skills, and improves their communication and language skills.
What age is this for?
This sensory activity is appropriate for children of all ages. Toddlers will simply enjoy the messy fun in the tub.
Older children will have fun being able to play with shaving cream and food coloring.
Teens and adults can make marbled paper to use in various art projects, from notecards to scrapbooking.
What kind of shaving cream do I need?
If you shop the sales, you can find shaving cream for less than a dollar. You don’t need to get the name brand kind. Any cheap, white shaving cream will work quite well.
If you have excess shaving cream, let the kids try shaving cream marbling.
Best paper for shaving cream painting
Watercolor paper works best when you create shaving cream art. I think the paint adheres to the surface better.
If the kids have friends over for shaving cream painting, you can use a big roll of white easel paper. When you have more than one child painting, it’s easier to use a large sheet of paper.
Holiday paint colors
Kids will have so much fun making art with shaving cream for every holiday. Let them invite their friends over for a fun painting party.
- Red and blue for patriotic holidays
- Orange and yellow for Halloween or autumn
- Pink and yellow for Easter
- Red and green for Christmas
Can you use watercolor paint?
Yes, you can use watercolor paint instead of food coloring. Keep in mind that it will be much messier to clean up than food coloring.
How do you paint with shaving foam?
It’s pretty easy to set up a shaving cream paint station. You will need:
- a container for the shaving cream (I used a cookie sheet)
- a few drops of food coloring
- paint brush
- A big piece of paper. Watercolor paper works quite well.
Optional: add a little liquid soap to the shaving cream to make it easier to clean up.
Tips for shaving cream paint
If you want to make lots of different colors, you can add shaving cream to a muffin tin. Then, add food colouring to each section. This way, you can have lots of different colors of shaving cream.
Use a popsicle stick to mix the shaving cream colors.

2. Add food coloring and stir gently with a popsicle stick.
3. Place the paper on top of the shaving cream mixture.
4. Use a fork or your fingers to swirl the paper around in the shaving cream.

Playing with shaving cream paint in the tub
Shaving cream paint is also lots of fun in the bathtub! You can put the shaving cream in a plastic container and then add food coloring.
Let your toddlers paint themselves in the bath and have some fun. This is an easy clean activity because they are already in the bath tub. The food coloring shaving cream paint will wash right off your child with soap.
Just let their creativity go and have fun with it.
Cleaning up after shaving cream play
If you’re painting with shaving cream, protect your surfaces. I like to use a big cookie sheet to contain the mess.
If you’re adding food coloring to the shaving cream, it may stain surfaces. Be sure to clean up any spills immediately.
Shaving cream can be tough to clean if you don’t have soap. I like to add a little liquid soap to the mixture to make clean-up easier.
